Metropolitan Developer Limited are delighted with the start of construction at their latest project in Leeds. The Plaza is being developed by the UNITE Group plc and once completed will offer the tallest student accommodation in the world.
After being awarded the contract in 2007 for completion of the 37-storey concrete frame by Shepherd Construction, work has been taking place on site and has culminated in the completion of a 110 metre high reinforced concrete core which is dominating the Leeds skyline. The core alone took in excess of 3,000 cubic metres of concrete and over 400 tonnes of reinforced steel to complete.
Work has now progressed onto preparing the floor slabs which Metropolitan expect to complete and hand back to the main contractor within 12 months. Once completed the Plaza will be home to over 500 students.
In fact, the Plaza is the second large student accommodation project that Metropolitan have been working on in Leeds this year. Work on a 28-storey concrete frame was completed at a site on Jacob Street in the city for Ocon Construction earlier this year. That development will also ultimately provide accommodation for over 500 students.
Michael Cannon of Metropolitan Developer says: - "We are delighted to have been awarded the contract to work on the Plaza by Shepherd Construction. The site is a very compact one meaning that we have been facing a number of challenges but we are delighted with the progress so far and the scale of the project is now there for everybody in Leeds to see with the concrete core towering above the city skyline."
